International Day of People with Disability

Every year on December 3, the United Nations (UN) observes International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD).  On this day, we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of persons with disabilities and work to increase compassion, understanding, and acceptance in our society.

4.4 million Australians, or around one in six, have a disability.  Some disabilities are invisible, and not all disabilities are the same.  We may explore our ideas about disability and work to improve society by participating in the discussion and listening to the tales and lived experiences of individuals with disabilities.

In celebration of this day, check out the events available in your local area: Attend an event – International Day of People with Disability (idpwd.com.au).

Why is this day important?

Anyone with a disability will share that their goal is to live a life where they are included and can participate in their interests and live their goals and dreams just like everyone else.

Many disabilities are invisible, making life harder than it needs to be due to limited awareness.

Many have not had conversations about or been exposed to disability.  When we start an open dialogue about disability, we can become familiar that a person with a disability is a human being just like you.  With this increased awareness, we can become more inclusive and accepting.

HAPPY IDPwD may we all be open to the possibilities available to everyone with a disability.
